Cori Holquinn

Private Cello & Bass Instructor

Education:  Associates in Arts and Sciences from Whatcom Community College; Currently attending WWU for a Bachelors in Music – Cello Performance

Influences:  J. S. Bach, Apocalyptica, Yo-yo Ma, David Bowie.

Studied with: Chip Bergeron, and currently with John Freisen.

Bio:  Cori is a Bellingham native, grew up on the north side of Bellingham, and began her musical journey at the age of 9 when she was loaned a violin by a former teacher. Sparking an interest in music, but quickly realizing that the violin was not the right instrument for her, she gave up violin after only a year and a half for the cello and has never looked back. Cori has been playing the cello for over 15 years and in that time she has performed with various local groups including the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra (current member of 9 years), the North Sound Community Orchestra, Whatcom Community College Collegiate Choirs and Music Club, Western Washington University Symphony Orchestra, and has toured around the Pacific Northwest with local Argentine tango band, Toccato Tango.

Cori has had the opportunity to work with, and receive coaching, from many professional level musicians such as Karen Iglitzin (Seattle area music instructor), Gerard Schwartz (former artistic director of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra), various members of the New York Philharmonic, Joshua Roman (Seattle-native virtuoso cellist), and Johannes Moser.

In her spare time, Cori enjoys discovering and listening to new music, creating artwork through drawing and/or painting, and relaxing at home with her 3 cats, 11 fish, and one snail. When the weather is fair, she occasionally takes her cello out on the streets of Bellingham to do some “street jams” with friends.

Method of Teaching: Cori’s teaching is tailored to the individual student’s needs and goals. She believes that the sincere interest in music needs to present within a student before any serious instruction is to be given and she is more than happy with teaching the basics of general music to give that interest a little push-start. Cori is comfortable teaching general music to all ages, and will accept cellists levels beginner to intermediate/advanced.
